Hope for the Wanderer

As we study these last two verses of James, we’ll see the wanderer in the first part of verse 19, the bringer in the second part of verse 19 and the first part of verse 20, and the hope in the second half of verse 20.

As we study our text, we will learn what to do with life in verses 13 through 15 and what to do with sin in verses 16 through 18.

Taming the Tongue, Part III

As we study our text, we will look to the Old Testament, Jesus, and James to find this radical call for radical truthfulness is what flows out of the negative of the call in the first part of verse 12 and the positive of the command in the second half.

We’ll flip around a bit this morning, but in our text we will find a few incentives for patience, beginning in verse 7, 9-10 with our common bond in Christ, continuing verses 7, 10, and 11 with our three examples to follow, and concluding in verses 7 through 9 with our Lord’s return.

Warning to the Rich

As we study our text, we’ll find four indictments on the ungodly rich for us to examine ourselves to make sure we’re not guilty; hoarding in verse 2-3, fraud in verse 4, self-indulgence in verse 5, and murder in verse 6.

As we study our text we will find what not to say in verses 13-14 and what to say in verses 15-17.

Who Do You Think You Are!

As we study our text we will find the command against speaking down on others in the first part of verse 11 is to attempt to place yourself above the law in the second part of 11 and above God in verse 12.

Grace for the Humble

As we study our text we will find a jealous but gracious God in verses 5 and the first part of verse 7, a sinful but penitent people in the second part of first 7 through 9, and the gravity of grace in verse 10.

A Ness of a Problem!

As we study our text, we will find quarrelsomeness in verses 1 and 2a, prayerlessness in verses 2b through 3, and worldliness in verse 4.

Wisdom from Above

As we study our text, we’ll find James offer us a choice between fake wisdom in verses 13 through 16, real wisdom in verses 17 and 18, and then have a brief flashback to James 1:5.

As we study this text, we’ll find two contradictions in verses 9 and 10, and come to the conclusion in verses 11 and 12.

Taming The Tongue, Part I

As we study our text we find the tongue is small but powerful in verses 3 through the first part of 5, small but destructive in the rest of verse 5 and verse 6, and that our tongues are small but uncontrollable in verses 7 and 8.

Perilous Preaching

As we consider these preliminary words on bridling the tongue, we find three important things; a word of caution in verse 1, a dose of reality in the first part of verse 2, and a glimmer of hope in the second half of verse 2.

As we study this text, we’ll come to a question in verse 20, the examples of a father and a prostitute from verses 21 through 25, and come to the conclusion of this whole section in verse 26.

As we study our text, we will be reminded of three things: Favoritism violates God’s Law in verses 8 through 11, Favoritism will be judged by God in verse 12, because Favoritism reveals an unmerciful spirit in verse 13.

Two Visitors

As we study our text, we’ll find the command to not show partiality is given by the examples in verses 1 through 4, the enigma in verses 5 through 7, and the exhortation in verse 8, the latter of which will tie this message with the next sermon.

True Religion

As we study our text, we’re find the marks of true religion as a taming of the tongue in verse 26, a caring for the needy in the first half of verse 27, and a call to stay unstained from the world in the second half of verse 27.

Do The Word

As we study our text, we’ll find the choice between being a glancer of the Word in verses 22 through 24 or a gazer into God’s Word in verse 25. Will you be a glancer, or a gazer?

Hear The Word

As we study our text we will be urged by James to HEAR the Word eagerly in verses 19 and 20, REPENT from sin faithfully in verse 20 and the first half of verse 21, and RECEIVE the Word meekly in the second half of verse 21

Gifted From Above

As we study our text this morning, we’ll consider God’s goodness through His gifts in the first part of verse 17 and the giver of them in the second part, along with the greatest gift of all in verse 18.

Tempted From Within

As we study our text, we’ll find temptations have a reason, verses 13 and 14, and our temptations have at least two results, verses 15 and 16.

The Crown of Life

As we study this text, we will ask who will be blessed, when will they be blessed, and what will be the blessing, three questions James answers so beautifully, filling those who hear them with hope to endure each and every storm we face.

A Counter-Cultural Paradox

As we study this text, we will find the Rich Poor in verses 9, the Poor Rich in verses 10 and 11, and then I’ll share a word for everyone for the counter-cultural call this is for all of us as we seek to remain one in Christ.

Wisdom For The Storm

As we study our text we will find storms require wisdom in the first part of verse 5, wisdom requires prayer in the second part of verse 5, and prayer requires faith in verses 6 through 8.

Joy In The Storm

As we mine the depths of James 1:2-4, we find the irrational call in verse 2, followed by that rational reason behind it in verse 3 and 4, and then we’ll make few distinctions about trials in light of both.
